Police Activity Closes Piscataqua River Bridge: Drivers Face Delays

The Maine Turnpike Authority has shut down the Piscataqua River Bridge on Interstate 95 between Maine and New Hampshire in both directions due to a police incident.

Drivers should expect heavy traffic in the area between the New Hampshire state line and Exit 7. York Police are advising drivers to use Route 1 to get into New Hampshire this morning. However, by 6:30 a.m., there were long backups on Route 1 in Kittery, with traffic at a standstill south of Exit 2. Traffic was also slow on the other bridges between Maine and New Hampshire, reaching all the way to the Portsmouth traffic circle, which was also backed up.

The incident was first reported around 2:50 a.m. Thursday. New Hampshire State Police confirmed they are responding to an active situation. The Turnpike Authority says the bridge was closed after a 911 call reported something that might have happened in New Hampshire.
